The third generation of computer (1965-1975)

IC Chip

1. In the third generation computers, the use of Integrated Circuit Chip started in place of transistors. The development of SSI (Small Scale Integration) and later MSI (Medium Scale Integration) made it possible to manufacture hundreds of electronic components, such as transistors, resistors and capacitors, in an integrated circuit chip.
2. The use of keyboard and monitor became popular as input and output devices respectively. Using the keyboard made it easy to enter data and instructions into the computer.
3. The storage capacity of magnetic tapes and discs increased. The speed of the computer increased due to Semiconductor Storage Devices.
4. The computation time of the computer was measured in nano seconds (ns). This increased the working efficiency of the computer. (1 Nano second = 1/1000 Micro Second)
5. Commercial and personal use of computers started.
6. PL-1, PASCAL, and BASIC were developed in the higher level language.
7. Time Sharing Operating System was developed.
8. Started selling hardware and software separately. This allowed the user to get the software as per the requirement.
9. In 1965, the first commercial mini computer PDP-8 (Programmed Data Processor - 8) was developed by DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation).
